Coimbatore/New Delhi, Aug 26 (Reuters) – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd said its automobile rake reached the Pollachi Railway Terminal in Tamil Nadu last week, making it the first passenger vehicle manufacturer to send cars by rail to the facility.
The rake, carrying 120 vehicles including Wagon R, Ertiga, Dzire and Celerio models, was flagged off from the company’s Manesar in‑plant railway siding on Aug. 18.
Maruti Suzuki worked with Indian Railways to operationalise the terminal, adding Pollachi as a new destination alongside Coimbatore. The terminal is expected to handle about 70 automobile rakes annually, supporting the delivery of more than 11,000 vehicles to the region each year.
The company began rail‑based vehicle dispatches in FY2014‑15. Rail accounted for 26.5% of its outbound dispatches in FY2025‑26, compared with 5% in FY2014‑15. Maruti Suzuki has cumulatively dispatched over 3.2 million vehicles by rail to date.
The automaker said it aims to raise the share of rail dispatches to 35% by FY2030‑31.
